PROFESSOR

He is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology and the Centre for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of persistence, drug tolerance, and redox signaling in pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and HIV, with the goal of developing innovative strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance and improve infectious disease treatment.

Objectives of the Course

Provide an understanding of antibiotics, their mechanisms of action, and clinical uses.

Explain the biology of microbes, infection pathways, and host-pathogen interactions.

Expose learners to emerging therapies, novel antimicrobials, and non-traditional approaches (eg, phage therapy, immunomodulators).

Course Syllabus

Comprehensive understanding of antibiotics, their mechanisms of action, and their role in treating infectious diseases, while also addressing the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Aims to build awareness about the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, promote principles of rational prescribing and stewardship, and equip learners with practical knowledge in diagnostics, surveillance, and infection prevention.

By integrating scientific, clinical, public health, and policy perspectives, the course seeks to prepare participants to contribute effectively to preserving antibiotic efficacy, combating resistance, and supporting sustainable strategies for global health security.
